Health, nutrition and fitness are the three interrelated areas that determine a person’s happiness and well-being.
Health includes the physical, mental and spiritual level of the individual. A physically fit person is one who can engage in normal daily physical activities and respond to emergencies without reversing fatigue or pain. The health part of health, nutrition and fitness is achieved through a balanced program of good nutrition, healthy physical activity, continued education and mental activity, and social and spiritual activities. Your food choices and physical activities affect both your short-term and long-term health (how you feel now and in the future). You can get plenty to eat, but if there isn’t a proper balance of choosing from all five staple food groups, you can add fat to your body without generating the energy to burn the calories and energy for the cells to do their jobs. Healthy physical activity helps burn excess calories and keeps muscles and joints flexible and strong. Your efforts in further education (reading, attending seminars, and attending formal educational courses) and spiritual activities (social activities, attending devotional services, meditation, etc.) give you a sense of accomplishment and well-being. An important part of good health is being physically fit and maintaining a reasonable body weight. Maintaining good health requires a nutritious diet and exercise to build and maintain muscle and burn excess calories.
The nutritional portion of health, diet and fitness deals with the foods we consume to maintain our health and provide energy for our daily lives. Nourishment is the process of nurturing or being nourished; the sum of all processes that a plant or animal uses to absorb and process nutrients in order to maintain a healthy life. A healthy diet requires a balanced diet from the five basic food groups of fruits, vegetables, naturally calcium-rich dairy products or calcium-fortified products, whole grains, and protein (lean meat, fish, peas, and beans). Other dietary factors should also be considered. Most fruits and vegetables are better when eaten raw as heating destroys some of the healthy nutrients. Steaming and frying food is better than boiling or frying food. Preparing fresh fruits and vegetables is better than processed or prepared foods.
The food that is prepared generally contains more salt (sodium) than necessary and other flavor-enhancing substances. Some of these additives add no nutritional value to the food and can even be harmful to health. Other dietary factors to consider include the variety of fruits and vegetables in our diet. Nutritional data shows that dark green vegetables (romaine lettuce, kale, broccoli, etc.) and orange vegetables (carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, and summer squash) offer higher nutritional value than some of the less colorful vegetables. Foods high in protein are harder to digest and therefore require more calories in the digestive process. Physical Fitness Part of fitness, health and nutrition is the ability to perform daily activities, enjoy recreational activities and have a healthy immune system to resist disease and infection. Developing and maintaining good physical fitness requires a balance of good nutrition and a variety of physical activity. There are several elements of physical fitness: specific fitness the ability to perform daily tasks related to work or play, general fitness the ability to enjoy leisure time and a sense of peace with the environment, preparedness the ability to overcome or respond to emergencies avoid.
There are also three factors to achieving good physical fitness: good nutrition, physical activity, and being restful (sleep). Nutrition maintains cellular health and provides the energy to do exercise. Physical activity can be used to perform work, earn a living, participate in sporting events, develop and maintain a healthy cardiovascular system, or control body weight. Physical fitness and how physical fitness is achieved varies from person to person. If a person has a job that requires intense activity and has a good diet, no other exercise may be needed to maintain a fit body.
But even people who work hard at their job may need additional cardiovascular exercise to keep their heart and blood vessels in optimal condition. Individuals whose jobs do not require intense physical activity must make extra efforts to achieve and maintain physical fitness. A good diet is the obvious starting point. Some simple things include using stairs instead of elevators, parking a little farther from the office or store entrance, throwing away the TV remote, changing channels the old-fashioned way, and walking near offices or neighbors instead of closing the phone to use. These efforts will help, but good physical fitness requires more vigorous physical training.
Cardiovascular health requires routine physical activity for at least 20 minutes three times a week. The best and generally most comfortable form of cardiovascular exercise is walking. Another good cardiovascular exercise is swimming. Swimming also helps build and tone muscles. The other factor in developing and maintaining physical fitness is strength training to build and tone muscle and burn fat. Strength exercises are good for weight management because they stimulate muscle growth even after the exercise is complete. This means that the body continues to burn fat for a longer period of time.
Mental health, as it applies to healthy eating and fitness, is the way we think, feel and act while interacting with our surroundings. Our mental health contributes to our relationships with other people, how we make decisions, make choices, and how we deal with stress. People with good mental health are able to control their emotions, feelings, and behavior. Keeping the mind active through reading, play, and an active social life contributes to good mental health.
spiritual health Spirituality can be defined as sensitivity or attachment to religion, or as a condition of the spiritual. Some people ignore or overlook the importance of spirituality in relation to healthy eating and fitness because they only associate spirituality with religion. Throughout history man has struggled with the concept of spirituality. Basically, spirituality is the struggle to become the most perfect person or individual. The way to achieve this goal can be through seeking external help through religion in some form or through internal meditation and the study of present and past human interactions.
