The specific treatment for bipolar disorder may be different for each person, but in general, bipolar treatment focuses on a combination of medical and psychological approaches.

Scientific evidence suggests that the mood swings seen in patients with bipolar disorder are caused by disorders in a number of neurochemical systems in the brain. For this reason, “mood stabilizer” drugs are the first line of treatment for bipolar disorder.

The drugs can help reduce the severity, if not prevent, of flare-ups. It has also been found that many of these drugs actually protect the brain from damage that can occur as a result of the chemical imbalances caused by bipolar disorder.

Psychological approaches have also been shown to naturally complement medication in the management of bipolar disorder. An important part of psychological approaches is continuing education, sometimes referred to as psychoeducation, for bipolar sufferers.

This helps in understanding living with bipolar, rationale for medication, and identifying stress and triggers as early warning signs. With this knowledge and these strategies, people can achieve an improved quality of life and a better understanding of the disease.

Once a person has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, finding the right medication and dose, as well as a psychological approach that “fits” the person, can take time. No one drug or psychological treatment is right for everyone, and while trying to find appropriate treatments can be frustrating, part of the journey is finding the ones that work for the individual.
